Coin drive begins today to raise funds for Municipal Pool.
Shawnee Public Schools is hosting a coin drive beginning today in an effort to help with raising funds to go toward the new Shawnee Municipal Pool.
Shawnee Superintendent Marc Moore said the new pool is something Shawnee students and many others will enjoy.
“We thought it was something our students would be using and their children in the future,” he said.
John Ayers, Shawnee Municipal Pool committee member, said this is a last minute push for funds to finish out the amount needed for the Avedis Foundation grant along with encouraging students to become involved in the community.
“It’s an opportunity for them to get involved in the community and an opportunity for them to learn how to give back to their community,” Moore said.
Moore said posters have been put up at all eight Shawnee Public School sites along with buckets that students can put their coins in throughout the week. The coin drive will end Wednesday.
“We’ve done very well so far,” Ayers said, adding 106 donations have been made from individuals around Shawnee.
“It’s not too late to contribute,” he said. “We are so close to matching the Avedis Foundation challenge grant, which amounted to half our fundraising goal of $1.2 million.”
Ayers said while the total cost of the pool and bath house project totals $4.2 million, $3 million was committed by the City of Shawnee and the pool committee was responsible for raising the remaining amount.
“To date, we are approximately $56,000 shy of our fundraising goal and matching the Avedis Foundation grant who challenged the pool committee to match their $616,600 grant,” he said.
Ayers said the renderings of the pool are still with the State Department of Health for approval. The State Department has had the renderings for approximately a month.
“We are anxiously waiting their approval of our plans,” Ayers said.
The Pool Committee will go out to bid on the project upon receiving the renderings of the pool from the State Department.
“Everything’s good to go,” Ayers said.
Along with the building of the new pool structure, Ayers said the bathhouse is being revamped.
“The pool house is going to be awesome,” he said.
Ayers said the revamping with include the boys and girls locker room, restrooms and addition of a kitchen.
“The kitchen will be a great addition to the pool house because it can be used even when the pool is closed,” he said.
Ayers said there will be a window facing the pool that will be used to serve during pool hours but citizens can also use the kitchen for other events because there will be a window facing the outside of the building, away from the fenced in pool, facing the park.
