The 4th annual “Crystal Run” will be held in downtown Okemah at 1 p.m. Feb. 22. The event is held each year as a major fundraiser for Okemah’s historic “Crystal Theatre”.

Each year, participation in the event has grown exponentially and the 2013 run drew 275 runners from 7 states including 1 participant who traveled from Las Vegas, Nevada. Funds from the event are used to maintain and operate the theater which not only shows first run movies 7 nights per week, but also serves as a music venue for the Woody Guthrie Celebration each July. Crystal Run organizer, Tessa Russell states, “This event has grown bigger and better than we ever really expected. It is something the businesses and townspeople are beginning to look forward to each year.” Russell went on to say, “We would like to thank all of the sponsors and those who promote the Crystal Run each year. It has drawn our community closer together and shines a positive light on Okemah.”

This year, entrants will receive a “tech style” shirt with an artist’s rendering of the famous Okemah water towers. The design was created by Tulsa artist and designer, Keith Whitfield. They will also receive a goody bag with coupons and gifts from local businesses.

Prior to the 5K run, a 1K Fun Run will be held. Participants in both events will receive the t-shirt and goody bag. Entrants are welcome to run, jog, or walk. Race organizer Russell reiterates, “Everyone is encouraged to take part no regardless of conditioning or athletic abilities.” The run is a timed event on a certified course. Medals will be awarded to the top 2 male and female finishers in each age category. The business or organization with the most entries will receive a plaque.

Cost to enter the 5K prior to February 14th will be $25.00 and the Fun Run is $15.00. After the February 14th deadline, the cost increases $5.00 for each event. The Fun Runbegins at 1:00 p.m. and the 5K begins at 1:30 in front of the Crystal Theatre at 401 West Broadway.

The Crystal Theatre was built in 1921 as a Vaudeville theater, and remodeled in 1931. It’s design was inspired by Tulsa’s Ritz Theater, with floating clouds, twinkling stars, stained glass lights, and cut velvet upholstered seats. With its balcony and orchestra pit, the Crystal Theatre is one of very few historical theaters left in Oklahoma. The theater has been recently remodeled and is operated by Okemah’s CIA.
