  • SAPULPA — A double dose of Bailey Taylor and McKenzie Cooper pushed Shawnee past Del City 50-36 in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A Girls state basketball tournament Thursday.
Taylor led the way with 19 points while Cooper added 13 points.
The win moved top-ranked Shawnee’s record to 26-0 while fifteenth-ranked Del City finishes their season with an 11-17 mark.
The Lady Wolves streaked ahead early, finishing the first quarter with a 14-4 lead.
Del City fought back with a 9-8 advantage in the second quarter to cut Shawnee’s lead to 22-13 at halftime.
But the momentum proved short-lived as the Lady Wolves won the third quarter by the score of 17-12.
Kelsey Simmons had six points for Shawnee while Mo Tramble, Shaiann Tramble and Tyann Maytubby each had four points to round out the Lady Wolves’ scoring.
Piper Kalthoff led Del City with 10 points. Breail Goodlow and Madison Welchel had nine and eight points, respectively, for the Lady Eagles.
Wendi Wells, Shawnee girls’ head basketball coach, said it was good to win the first game at state.
“We got out the first game jitters,” she said. “But we didn’t play under control. We made a lot unforced turnovers and missed quite a few easy shots.”
    Rivalry Renewed
The win means Shawnee moves on to face a familiar foe in Deer Creek at 7:30 p.m. tonight inside the Mabee Center at Oral Roberts University.
The two squads played Jan. 7 in Deer Creek.
The Lady Wolves prevailed 30-23 in that game.
Cooper was Shawnee’s leading scorer that night with 17 points while Bailey Taylor chipped in seven points.
Deer Creek beat Piedmont 55-36 following Shawnee’ game.
The Lady Antlers (22-5) are ranked third in Class 5A.
Back in January, Wells called Deer Creak a good team.
However, after scouting the Lady Antlers late Thursday night, Wells called them a “much-improved team.”
“We will need to have better focus and discipline tomorrow,” she added.
This will mark the second straight season the teams have met in the state tournament.
Last season, Deer Creek beat Shawnee 59-44 in the championship game.
Prior to that, Shawnee won the teams’ 2012-2013 regular season meeting 65-51.
Other scores from the Class 5A State Tournament were Carl Albert 37, Collinsville 32 and Tulsa East Central 51, Chickasha 31.
Carl Albert will face Tulsa East Central at 4:30 p.m. today inside the Mabee Center at Oral Roberts University.
