  • Several Pottawatomie County seats along with seat on the Shawnee city commission are open this election year and the candidate filing period will be held in April.
    Statewide election activity officially begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 9 for the start of the three-day candidate filing period, said Diana Knight, secretary of the Pottawatomie County Election Board.
    Rather than being held on a Monday through Wednesday, the candidate filing will begin Wednesday and conclude on Friday, April 11. Filing is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
    Candidates wanting to run for state offices file with the Secretary of the State Election Board in Oklahoma City, while candidates for county offices file with the secretary of the County Election Board.
    In Pottawatomie County, Knight said the offices of county assessor, county Treasurer and District 1 and 3 county Commissioner seats will be up for election this year.
    For the city of Shawnee races, seats up for election are those in Wards 1, 5, and 6.
    Among the state offices affecting this area will be seat open for the office of District 23 District Attorney.
