  • The contest deadline to name the bear on display at the Santa Fe Depot Museum has been extended to Saturday, April 26. Entries submitted in person at the depot, 614 E. Main Street in Shawnee or postmarked by April 26 and mailed to the Pottawatomie County Historical Society, P. O. Box 114, Shawnee, OK 74802-0114 will be considered.

The winning name submitted to Pottawatomie County Historical Society will be announced on Saturday, May 3. The school submitting the winning entry will receive a prize of $500.

Each school in Pottawatomie County is eligible to submit one proposed name for the bear. The method of selecting the name the school will submit is the option of the school’s administration. For example the names could be suggested by the student council, the honor society, an elementary school grade, the band, cheer leaders, etc. Only one name should be submitted by each school.

For example in Shawnee, a name can be submitted by each elementary school, the Middle School and the High School. If duplicate names are submitted and chosen as winners, the prize will be split between the schools.

The bear is an Alaskan Brown bear which was shot by Wilson Baptist in 1967. For many years it was in the front window of Baptist Hardware. Over time the rays of the sun faded the brown coat so that it is now cream color.

The Santa Fe Depot Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday it is open from 2 to 4 p.m. The Museum will be closed on Easter Sunday.
