  • North Rock Creek schools received a $1,496 donation from Absentee Shawnee Tribe to go toward their archery program, which began this year.
“The kids absolutely loved shooting during their P.E. classes,” said Superintendent Blake Moody.
Moody said the school applied for an Oklahoma Department of Wildlife grant and received half of the equipment and that’s when Absentee Shawnee Tribe stepped in.
“This program gave students an opportunity to excel in a competitive sport,” he said.
Moody said the school purchased 12 new bows, two backstop nets, a bow rack, 200 arrows, a repair kit and five targets with the money.
“The kids that were excellent shooters were not necessarily the best athletes,” Moody said. “They did have great focus and determination. Because of this fact, the program was even more successful in my opinion.”
Fifth grade students were the only students that participated during the pilot year but Moody said he’s excited to see the program grow.
