  • Writing about cleaning our city streets and public spaces of trash may seem like a strange subject for a gardening article, but the most attractive landscape is marred when there are plastic bags caught on shrubs, aluminum drink cans in the gutter, Styrofoam drink cups, and plastic water bottles scattered around.

Saturday morning, April 12 is Shawnee’s Annual Trash- Off Day. This is a national, as well as a state wide, emphasis to remove debris from our public landscaping. It is sponsored by the City of Shawnee Parks Department with assistance from Keep Oklahoma Beautiful and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

The picnic shelter at Kidspace in the 1300 block of North Center Street will serve as headquarters. There, assignments will be made; gloves and vests as well as trash bags will be provided. The headquarters will be open from 8 am until noon.

This year, thanks to a number of local sponsors, coffee, donuts, and bottled water will be provided as long as the supply holds out. Local sponsors for the event include Billy Boy Bar-B-Q, Busy B’s Donuts, Dan Marker Counseling Center, Don’s Plants, Doyle’s Daylight Donuts, Pond Pro Shop, Shawnee Garden and Landscape, Shawnee Firefighters, Tractor Supply, and Vision Bank.

In cooperation with the Parks Department the City of Shawnee Beautification Committee is contacting public schools, universities, civic clubs, church youth groups and individual citizens to take time to participate in this important civic activity, even if only for an hour. There are many other activities on Saturday’s calendar, but a careful planner can work all of them in if the desire is there.

In 1939, the City of Shawnee’s annual City Clean-up campaign lasted from April 10 to April 22. At the conclusion city leaders pointed out “If no other good has resulted, city residents have become clean-up conscious and the drive’s benefits will be carried over throughout the summer.” We hope that on the 75th anniversary of this effort that Shawnee residents will help to make and keep Shawnee Clean and Beautiful.
