The Wolves avenged last week's loss to the Buffaloes with a 3-2 win at McAlester on Saturday, clinching the District 5A-4 title in the process.

MCALESTER – Less than two weeks after a home loss to McAlester put their district title hopes in doubt, the Shawnee Wolves won their fourth game of the week on Saturday, defeating the Buffaloes 3-2 and clinching first place in District 5A-4.

The Wolves (28-5 overall, 13-1 in district play) will host one of two 5A East regionals beginning on Thursday. The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Associations will release the official playoff brackets on Monday.

Saturday’s game also saw a rematch of starting pitchers, as freshmen Eli Davis and Mason Ross dueled for the second time this season.

Last week it was Ross who won 2-0, handing Davis his only loss of the season. This time Davis won both with his pitching arm and his bat, going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double in the top of the second inning that gave Shawnee the lead for good.

Davis also had 13 strikeouts in six innings on the mound, walking three and allowing seven hits for his ninth win of the year.

Ross finished with 14 strikeouts in six innings, allowing six hits and two walks.

The Wolves got on the board first in the top of the first inning. A.J. Barron doubled with one out, followed by base hits by Josh Rolette and Jake Taylor, the second one scoring Barron to make it 1-0.

The Buffaloes (18-16, 11-3) struck back in the bottom of the frame, with Dalton Wood and Brandon Green hitting back-to-back, two-out doubles to get their first run of the contest.

Davis drove in Teddy Robertson with a two-out double in the second to make it 2-1 and later scored after leading off the top of the fifth with a base hit.

Rolette was intentionally walked, Cooper was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Landon Harper drew a walk to force in Davis and make it 3-1.

The Buffaloes got one back in the sixth when Homer led off with a double and later scored on a base hit by Chad Meadows before Davis got out of the inning.
