  • The Dale Pirates dug themselves a deep hole in their quest to return to the 2A state baseball tournament on Friday, losing their second game of the day to regional host Christian Heritage on Friday.
The Pirates defeated Tonkawa 12-1 in five innings in their first game of the day, scoring in every inning but the first to advance.
Hunter Sanford got the win on the mound and went 3-for-4 on the plate. Hunter Pinkston also had three hits, including a double and a two-run home run that ended the game in the fifth inning.
Lane Cox had a two-run home run in the second and Joe Buckendorf added a solo shot in the fifth for the Pirates. Xavier Lanham and Chase Byndas added two hits apiece.
In their second game of the day against Christian Heritage, the Pirates dug themselves an early hole and couldn’t climb out.
The Crusaders built a 5-0 lead after the first three innings. Dale countered with three in the fourth and two more in the seventh before falling 6-5.
Byndas took the loss on the mound for the Pirates, who will now have to win three games to advance to state. Pinkston went 3-for-4 with a home run in the fourth inning.
Dale will play the Tonkawa-Community Christian winner at 2 p.m. on Saturday. A win would get them a rematch against Christian Heritage at 4 p.m. The Pirates will need to defeat the Crusaders on Saturday and again on Monday, with CHA needing a win in either game to advance to state.
