  • Shawnee track captures regional title

  • The Shawnee Lady Wolves won three relay events and captured the team title at their 5A track regional at Claremore High School Saturday.

  • CLAREMORE – The Shawnee Lady Wolves won three relay events and captured the team title at the Class 5A regional at Claremore High School on Saturday.
    The Lady Wolves took first in the 4x400, 4x200 and 4x800 relays, qualifying for next week’s state championship in all three events.
    The top three finishers in each event automatically qualify for state. The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association will release the list of additional qualifiers on Monday.
    In addition to the three relay wins, the Lady Wolves got individual titles from Kelsey Simmons in the 400 meters, and Paige Hughes in the 800, as well as a second place finish in the 4x100 relay.
    The Lady Wolves finished 1-2 in both the 400 and 800, with Allegra Sloan capturing the silver in the 400, while Mo Tramble was the runner-up in the 800.
    Sadie Cullison added a second place finish in the 1600, with Hughes also qualifying for state with a third place finish. Ashley Gonyou also had a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
    Madison Rutherford was second in the pole vault while Daylan Storie rounded out the state qualifiers with a third place finish and a personal best in the 3200 meters.
    On the boys side the Wolves got a total of four gold medals on the day, including a win in the 4x100 relay.
    Shadrach Smith finished first in the 100-meter dash, while Malik Lytle won gold in both the 800 and 1600-meter runs.
    The Wolves also earned a second place finish in the 4x200 relay, while Malik Sharp and Taz Griffis finished second and third in the discus.
    Coby Barham rounded out the medalists for the Shawnee boys with a third place finish in the pole vault.
    The Wolves finished third behind Claremore and Skiatook in the team standings.
    The 5A-6A state track meet will be held at Yukon High School on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with running events beginning at 1 p.m. on both days.
