The third annual Jim Thorpe Games kicked off with three competitions on Monday throughout the Shawnee area.

This is the first year the Games will be held exclusively in Shawnee.

The golf and cross-country competitions kicked things off this morning. The golf tournament will finish on Tuesday at FireLake Golf Course while the cross-country running was held at Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech.

There was also a wrestling tournament for kids in elementary, middle and high school held at the Shawnee High School gym.

Nearly 30 kids competed in four separate divisions in the wrestling competition, from elementary to high school.

The three-day softball tournament which was supposed to begin on Monday was delayed a day because weekend rains left the Ballfields at FireLake unplayable. That competition will now run Tuesday through Thursday.

In addition to the golf and softball tournaments, Tuesday will also be the first day for the three-day basketball tournament, which will be held at Oklahoma Baptist and St. Gregory’s. There will also be a track and field meet at OBU and a practice will be held in preparation for Friday’s high school all-star football game.

The Jim Thorpe Games were created to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of Thorpe, who was born near Prague. The Games will run through Saturday.
