My mother got her own column for Mother's Day, so it seems only fair for my dad to get one too, though he has to share with my grandpa (I doubt he'll mind).

My dad and grandpa are some of the kindest, gentlest, and most patient men I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. I’ve rarely heard either raise his voice in anger to anyone.
In fact, I’d say they share a lot of traits in common.
Both of them, as far as I can tell, have worked hard their entire lives to provide for their families.
It seems like my dad is always juggling his job with work on the farm, and even in his mid-80s, my grandpa still goes down to do work on the farm.
Both of them have a love of books, which I have gladly inherited.
My dad is a huge “Lord of the Rings” fan, and also one of the people who talked me into reading the “Harry Potter” series. For a while, we would have family outings once a year to catch the latest “Harry Potter” or LoTR movie in theaters.
My grandpa is more of a westerns type of fellow, but I still have very fond memories of my childhood when he would take a lunch break from his work on the farm and spend time reading to me about the Bobbsey Twins and other characters.
Emilie Buchwald once said, “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”
I know my parents also read me books, but I always think of my grandpa when I see that quote, and I mentally thank him for fostering my love of reading.
And there are hundreds of other fond memories of both of them that would never fit in this little column.
A lot of people think their own parents and grandparents are the best ever, and I’m certainly no exception to that.
There are things in my life I would gladly change, but my family is not one of those things. I feel truly blessed to have these two great men in my life.
I hope they, and all father’s out there, have a wonderful Father’s Day.
