  • Chandler prepares to go Hog Wild this weekend

  • Once again the City of Chandler prepares to go Hog Wild for the Chandler Area Chamber of Commerce 5th Annual Hog Wild BBQ and Chrome Fest held from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. June 27-28 at the south pavilion of Tilghman Park. The event serves as a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned Oklahoma State Championship BBQ Contest. With changes to this year’s event, the event serves as more of a family-friendly event.
     
    The event is designed to raise funds for the Chandler Area Chamber of Commerce. Marilyn Emde, Executive Director of the Chandler Area Chamber of Commerce, said that there will be a carnival, a glow run, live entertainment, the KCBS barbeque competition, a kid’s treasure hunt, a car show, a fireworks display, crafts and vendors, a local flair amateur barbeque competition, and a people’s choice barbeque competition.
     
    Following is the schedule of events for the Hog Wild BBQ and Chrome Fest:
    At noon on Friday, June 27 the 2014 Chandler Hog Wild BBQ & Chrome Fest opens to the public, the vendor booths open and the food booths open. At 5 p.m. the carnival opens with wristbands available from 6-10 p.m. The Redland Band will also perform at 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. is the Kid’s Q Contest with turn in at 6:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. is the KCBS People’s Choice contest while supplies last. At 7 p.m. Lauren “Niki” Nichols will perform. Also at 7 p.m. is the Kid’s Treasure Hunt. At 9 p.m. is the Hog Wild Glow Run. At 10:30 p.m. the carnival and vendor booths close. From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. June 28 is quiet time.
     
    At 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28 the event opens to the public, the carnival opens, vendor booths open and food booths open. Local talent/DJ will perform at 10 a.m. and the Car & Bike Show begins at 10 a.m. The Redland Band will perform at noon. The Local Flair BBQ Contest and the Kid’s treasure Hunt will be held at 1 p.m. A DJ will perform at 2 p.m. At approximately 3 p.m. will be the Car & Bike Show awards. At approximately 4 p.m. will be the KCBS BBQ Contest Award Ceremony. At 5 p.m. the DJ will perform. At 6 p.m. will be the Local Flair People’s Choice Contest while supplies last. At 7 p.m. the Life of the Party Band will perform. At 10 p.m. the carnival closes. At 10:30 p.m. the vendor booths close. There will be a fireworks display at 10 p.m.
    Chuck Schardt, Glow Run committee chair, said that the event is a 5K run, which starts at the Hog Wild BBQ and Chrome Fest, heads toward the nursing home and the high school and ends at the Hog Wild event.

    “This is the first year we are doing the glow run,” Schardt said. “We are hoping to get a lot of people doing the run to make it an annual event.”
    Schardt said that families are encouraged to participate by decorating strollers and themselves with glow in the dark decorations.
     
    For the Kid’s Que Contest one pound of hamburger meat and a table will be provided. The child cook may have one adult present to assist in the lighting of the charcoal and to supervise. The preparation and cooking must be done entirely by the child. Turn-in containers will be provided.
     
    There will be two age divisions 6-10 years old and 11-15 years old. The first place winner will receive a trophy and $50, second place will receive a ribbon and $30, and third place will receive a ribbon and $20. Fourth through 10th place will receive ribbons. The entry fee is $15. Registration forms are available at the Chandler Area Chamber of Commerce and www.chandlerok.com.
     
    The people’s choice and local flair barbeque competition committee chairman Sam Brixey said that the people’s choice barbeque competition will be held Friday and Saturday night.
     
    Brixey said that with the local flair amateur barbecue competition, local teams, businesses and individuals will compete in a barbeque competition. He added that pork butt and chicken will be the only thing provided for the contestants.
     
    For the Local Flair competition, meat will be provided and must be cooked on site with a grill or smoker.
     
    Awards will be given for first through 10th place. Winners will be chosen by the People’s Choice. The entry fee for the contest is $50. Registration forms are available at the Chandler Area Chamber of Commerce and www.chandlerok.com.
     
    Jan Neufeld, President of the Chandler Area Chamber of Commerce, said that the entertainment for the event includes Lauren Nichols of Chandler on Friday night, local dance groups on Saturday morning, battle of the band performances from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and the Life of the Party Band from Oklahoma City will perform Saturday night. She added that for the battle of the bands competition, bands will compete and the top 10 bands will perform on Saturday.
     
    For the Battle of the Bands competition first and second place winners will be announced and prize money will be awarded during the final entertainment. Winners do not need to be present to win. The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. June 28. The first place band will receive $500 and the second place band will receive $200.

    The Car and Bike Show will be held on June 28. The day of the show entry fee is $25.
     
    Car classes are original, custom, Street rod, and unfinished/Rat Rod. Bike classes are customs, cruisers, sport bike and old school.
    For vendors, booth rentals are $50 for each 12 x 12 space. Setup time is June 27 by noon.
     
    Neufeld said that The Hungry Horny Toad of Chandler will serve as the chamber’s barbeque provider. She added that The Hungry Horny Toad will probably be the only food provider who serves barbeque.
     
    For food vendors, booth rental is $200 for businesses and $100 for non-profit organizations including a non-refundable deposit of $100 that is due upon Chamber acceptance. Setup time is June 27 by noon.
