  • Maria Wright of Shawnee has been teaching for 11 years and singing for much longer.
Wright said she started singing at about 5 years old and will be singing the national anthem at the International Youth Finals Rodeo on Monday and Tuesday at 9 a.m. and Thursday at 7 p.m.
“Mostly what I do with my voice is just sing in church and lead worship and just sing to the Lord,” she said.
Wright is a second grade teacher at Bethel Public School, and that is how she received the opportunity to sing at the IFYR.
“My principal asked me at one point to lead the national anthem and state song at our Morning Rise and Shine,” she said. “One of the other teachers made that connection for me.”
Wright said she is excited for the opportunity.
“I’m very honored,” she said. “I have a friend who’s in the Marine Corps and I understand the significance of the song.”
Aside from singing at school and church, Wright is also the lead singer in a band called Crosswalk, which performed at Shawnee Trail Days.
