  • I didn’t get up until nearly 7 yesterday morning, then had three cups of coffee outside while watching my chickens and turkeys.
One of my turkey hens has some baby poults and was upset because a wild turkey hen had come up and was walking near the fence.
My hen kept her poults in the center of the pen and it reminded me, for some reason, of The Beverly Hillbillies episode when Granny thought the gypsies were going to steal Jethro.
As the morning progressed, it turned out to be the first time since mid-May that I actually felt really good – almost back to normal – so I changed the fuel filter on my little John Deere and mowed until daughter Brooke called and said that the doctors were about to let grandson Noah out of the hospital.
After spending his first 22 days with wires and tubes and whatnot attached to him, the little guy was finally going to blow the joint. My son-in-law was at work and she needed me to drive the get-away car.
I put on a clean Hawaiian shirt and headed to Oklahoma City, only to realize I needed to stop for gas and a cold Dew.
There I was, pumping gas, when a van pulled up and out jumps a lady with a macaw on her shoulder, which isn’t something you see every day. In fact, I don’t recall ever seeing it before on any day.
Turns out the couple in the van came from Oklahoma City to rendezvous with some breeders in Shawnee. They graciously introduced me to the macaw, whose name I have forgotten.
I would have liked to hang out and see if it would sit on my finger, but I had that whole grandson thing going on and there was a truck behind me trying to get to the pump.
So, one hour, a cold Mountain Dew and a few rockabilly songs later, Noah was buckled into the backseat and headed home.
It was a very good day.
