  • The Shawnee Veterans of Foreign Wars post is holding a Korean Veterans Recognition Day on Saturday, July 26, and is inviting Shawnee and area Korean veterans to attend.
Zona Cockrell, whose late husband was a Korean veteran, said this is the first such recognition day for Korean veterans at the VFW and they hope to make it an annual event.
Cockrell, who said there are still 7,883 Missing in Action from that conflict, said they want to honor area Korean veterans for their service.
For the event, a breakfast also will be served from 9 to 11 a.m. July 26 at the VFW, located at 811 E. MacArthur.
“We really want to let the Korean veterans know they’re not forgotten,” she said.
Cockrell said while the VFW knows of at least 10 to 20 area Korean veterans, she believes there are many more around this area and she hopes they will attend to visit and share their stories.
“We’re losing our veterans so fast,” Cockrell said, adding family members of late Korean veterans also are invited to attend.
Cockrell said she’s continuing the work of her late husband, Charles, who always wanted to meet other Korean veterans.
She hopes Korean veterans will attend Saturday’s event, which is being is hosted by the VFW. For more information, Cockrell can be reached at 275-9563.
