  • A Shawnee man arrested while allegedly trying to remove an interlock system from a vehicle that was carjacked at a local gas station is now formally charged with numerous felony counts.
Jason Allen Stout, 28, was arrested earlier this month and is now charged in Pottawatomie County District Court with robbery in the first degree, a felony. He is accused of taking a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, an iPhone and cash that belonged to an Arizona woman, by placing a knife to her throat, charges read.
The incident occurred at the Circle K convenience store at 4848 N. Kickapoo on or about June 27 when the woman got back into her car after pumping gasoline, a police report shows.
She told police a white male wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt got into her vehicle and asked about gold coins.
Then the suspect allegedly brandished a knife and held it to the woman’s throat as he instructed her to give him her purse, the narrative reads. The suspect took several hundred dollars from the woman’s wallet as well as her cell phone; she exited the vehicle and the suspect drove off in her car going northbound, the report shows. The woman told police she did not know the suspect.
Events leading up to Stout’s arrest a few days later began when Shawnee Police Cpl. James Wood, who was on his day off, spotted an individual who was wanted by detectives for questioning about crimes that had occurred in town.
That man, later identified as Stout, fled the area but Wood was able to get a tag number to alert City Marshals Tom Cartwright and Brad Sherrill, Sgt. Dan Shumaker said.
That tag led city marshals to check out an address on Lake Road, he said, where they discovered Stout inside the stolen vehicle that was taken during the Circle K carjacking. Stout was reportedly “trying to remove the interlock system” when the officers arrived, Shumaker said.
Stout has a record that includes several prior felonies for charges of possession of a stolen vehicle.
In addition to the robbery charge for the carjacking, Stout also was charged with the felony of possession of a stolen vehicle for having the Hyundai. He is also charged with attempted burglary in the second degree, and is accused in that count of attempting to break into another vehicle. He’s also charged with knowingly concealing stolen property by concealing an Oklahoma license late that had been stolen.
Stout remains jailed in the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center. His next court date hasn’t yet been scheduled.
