The Shawnee Scissortails captured the OK Kids Midgets Baseball Championship on Saturday.

BLANCHARD – The Shawnee Scissortails captured the OK Kids Midgets Baseball State Championship on Saturday, defeating the Dale Pirates 8-4 in the championship game.

The Scissortails began their season in March with victories in Midwest City and with the Dale Early Bird Tournament title.

Then in April the Scissortails played in Chandler and Muskogee. They finished second in Muskogee and handed Tishomingo what would be their only loss of the season.

At the end of April the Scissortails finished in second place at the North Canadian Athletic Association Preseason Tournament. The Scissortails lost to the Dale Pirates twice in that tournament including the championship game. Those loses would be the first of four consecutive losses against Dale before Saturday's title game.

The Scissortails began league play in May as well as playing tournaments in Chandler, Muskogee and Cushing. Shawnee began hitting their stride in May only losing two games to Dale and Poteau. The Tails won tournaments in Chandler and Cushing and finished third in Muskogee.

The Scissortails continued playing well in June with good showings at tournaments in Oklahoma City and Kingfisher.

Shawnee ended league play winning the regular season earning an automatic bid to regionals.

The Shawnee Scissortails began their regional play in Morrison July 8th. The Scissortails defeated Woodward in game one only to suffer their worst loss of the season to Kingfisher 15-8 the next day. With elimination staring them in the face the Scissortails would come back to defeat Mannford and Alva getting to the regional final vs Kingfisher. Shawnee would defeat Kingfisher 9-8 and 8-2 to earn a trip to the state tournament.

Shawnee headed to Blanchard two days later, taking on Dale in game one of the OK Midgets Baseball State Tournament. Shawnee suffered their fourth consecutive loss to Dale 7-6 on a walk-off single.

Again with the threat of their season coming to an end the Scissortails would defeat Roff 7-2 to stay alive in the tournament.

After a day off due to a rainout Shawnee would face Clinton in another elimination game. After falling behind 2-0 the Scissortails tied the game in the top of the 6th sending the game to extra innings. The Tails scored a run in the 8th inning to win 3-2.

Shawnee would then face the Cushing Tigers 20 minutes after the Clinton game ended. Again, with the season hanging in the balance, Shawnee came through, defeating Cushing 7-6. That set up a one game winner take all game against Dale.

Shawnee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Dale in the first inning. Dale would tie the game at two in the top of the third inning, but Shawnee would score three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and the bottom of the 5th inning to take an 8-2 lead. Shawnee withstood a late Dale rally to win the state title 8-4.

For Austin Wood it was his third straight state tournament appearance, finally getting a championship. Jay Easley, Carson Fletcher, Tanner Bare, Carson Payne and Sergio Garcia earned their second state title. Those five won the OK Kids Coach Pitch State Championship in 2010 as members of the Shawnee Spikes.
