  • On Aug. 12, Bethel Public Schools will be back in session. School hours are 8:05 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Enrollment will be Aug. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Superintendent Jerry Johnson said some students can expect changes in their buildings. The district requested and received a QZAB loan and is using the money to make some improvements.
“We will be putting in a new air conditioning unit on the high school and we’ll be adding duro-last roofs to the middle school and vo-ag building,” Johnson said. “We’re going to purchase additional smart boards across campus.”
Jenny Affentranger, principal of the lower elementary, said they are hoping to see some improvements on the playground this fall.
Several new teachers will be introduced into the district, including Will Staats, middle school personal financial literacy and head wrestling coach, Brianne Johnson, high school English, Claudia Webb, upper elementary SPED, Derek Wellman, middle school geography, Loretta Childers, third grade, Kyler Phillips, high school math and more.
“I will be welcoming new staff, including Shannon Pruitt, reading remediation teacher,” said Tammy Cook, upper elementary principal.
Affentranger will have new staff members as well.
“I have a new first grade teacher, Mrs. Amber Shaw,” she said. “She comes from Horace Mann Elementary in Shawnee.”
Affentranger said there will be a new program for pre-K students.
“We are implementing a character education program for PreK-2nd grade called Manners of the Heart,” she said. “I have the founder and CEO, Jill Rigby, coming to train my teachers on Aug. 8.”
