  • A nice long walk

  • If you started walking and you averaged 2.5 miles per hour and you walked for several days you would get pretty far. If it were possible and you kept walking non-stop for a year you would actually travel 3,504 miles, as long as it’s not a leap year. Let’s just suppose that it’s not.

Take this same concept and keep going. After 5 years you would travel 17,520 miles.

    That is a long journey.
To give this some perspective, and I know it’s a little Forest Gumpish, if you traveled 17,520 miles and some change you could walk from Albany, New York to San Francisco and back 3 times, yes I googled it.
Now imagine looking back.  Think of all of the different people you would meet.  How many different landscapes would you come across?  Picture the seasons changing, the trees blooming and then shedding their green to prepare for winter.  There would be the near overbearing temperatures of the dry desert during the day then the cool inviting calmness during the night.  Then of course there are the mountains and how tough they would be on the upslope and how easy and forgiving they would be coming down.  Don’t forget about the long flat areas.  No hills.  Just miles and miles of repetition that sometimes you consider boring but others are mystified by the beauty.
Most days things would be different and ever changing.  It would be a great feat to overcome all of the challenges, yet the reward for simply putting one foot in front of another seems worth every single obstacle.
Five years seems like a long time, but then again it seems like it was just yesterday that my wife said yes.
Like that long walk our life has been a journey.  I look forward to the next 17,520 miles.
