  • Some Shawnee residents have reported “funny-tasting” water in recent days. In response to the curiosity, the city has provided a logical explanation.
Utility Director Steve Nelms expressed the latest storms are the clear cause.
“We’re currently experiencing a turnover in our lakes from the recent heavy rains,” he said.
Nelms explained the process starts as cold rain stirs up sediment at the bottom of lakes. He confirmed city water is still safe to drink.
“We are making adjustments at the water plant to correct taste and odor as much as we can,” he said.
The occurrence, Nelms noted, is not uncommon.
“Usually once a year, about this time,” he said of turnover frequency.
The department hopes to have adjustments complete by the end of the week.
