  • What began as a panhandling complaint that led to police recovering a stolen vehicle has now resulted in a felony charge for a Shawnee man.
Rickey Lee Vinson Jr., 32, is charged in Pottawatomie County District Court with possession of a stolen vehicle.
He is accused, on or about July 27, of possessing a 2011 Toyota Tacoma which had been stolen by parties unknown that same day.
A police report shows Officer Beau Bohuslavicky was flagged down in the 2300 block of North Harrison that day, where a man reported that a suspect in a gray Toyota pickup was panhandling for money in that area for several days in a row.
The officer patrolled the area and located a gray truck in the parking lot of Subway. A woman was in the truck and stated a male with her was inside the restaurant, but he was not panhandling.
Based on the vehicle tag, dispatchers advised the officer that the Toyota was reported as stolen from Oklahoma City as the man matching the description of the panhandler came out of the store, with the officer asking how he got there.
That suspect, later identified Vinson, pointed to the gray truck and walked toward it.
As he got to the driver’s side door, the officer ordered him to stop and place his hands out in front of him; the female also was asked to exit the car.
Both complied with the officer and were held at gunpoint until other officers arrived.
Vinson, and the female passenger, identified as Pvk-Pv-Ke Warledo, 36, were both detained.
The report shows Vinson told police he did not steal the pickup, but instead said he was allowing a friend to stay at his house and it was that man’s pickup, although Vinson did not know the friend’s real name.
Both Vinson and Warledo were arrested and booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center.
There’s been no formal charges filed yet against Warledo in connection with this case.
    Watch for any updates.
