High school football teams will begin practice on Monday and Tuedsay, while softball and volleyball teams will start their regular seasons this week.

Area sports teams will finally begin their seasons this week as practices open for high school and college football teams, while high school softball and volleyball play their first games.

The OBU Bison football squad was the first to get things underway, going through their first practices on Saturday and Sunday. The Bison had 117 players go through conditioning tests and practices over the weekend.

“It was great to have the veterans out here,” said OBU Coach Chris Jensen. “The young guys are giving great effort. They don’t always know what to do and when to do it but they are giving great effort.”

The team also held their inaugural Bison Bowl fundraiser at Firelake Bowling Alley on Saturday evening. The Bison will have a Fan/Media Day on Friday evening beginning at 6 p.m.

Most of the area high school football teams will begin practices on Monday or Tuesday. Shawnee, coming off a 9-3 season in 2013, will begin with an 8 a.m. practice on Tuesday morning. With school starting on Wednesday, the Wolves will return to their normal practice times for the rest of the week.

The Wolves will having picture day at Jim Thorpe Stadium on Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m.

The Seminole Chieftains will be one of five area teams beginning practice on Monday. The Chieftains will have their first workout at 5:30 p.m.

“We’re excited like everyone,” head coach Mike Snyder said. “This is the least amount o returning starters I’ve ever had. We’ll see how the kids respond. Our quarterback is back so that helps.”

Snyder is beginning his 34th season as the head coach at Seminole. Senior Doc Harvey will be returning as the Chieftains’ starting quarterback.

Other teams starting practice on Monday include Tecumseh, Bethel, Prague and Chandler.

Several area softball and volleyball teams will have their first regular season games on Monday or Tuesday. Prague, Seminole, McLoud and Chandler will all have their softball openers on Monday.

Bethel and Tecumseh softball, as well as Shawnee volleyball, will have their openers on Tuesday. The Lady Wolves will be hosting Del City, with the varsity game starting at approximately 6 p.m.
