Andrea Pope, executive director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Oklahoma City, accepts a check from Shawnee firefighters at Station No. 3 Friday in the amount of $6,608.82, which was collected during the department’s annual Fill the Boot drive. Firefighters collected funds from area motorists July 4-6 for the annual MDA drive. Funds raised each year support nearly 2,000 individuals in Oklahoma living with MDA and also provides research for 43 diseases including Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Each minute of research costs $65 and it costs $800 to send one child to MDA Summer Camp. MDA also funds a world-class neuromuscular center at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center where there is never a charge to see a whole team of specialists.
