Shawnee softball tourney moved to Firelake

Shawnee softball head coach David Rolette said the Lady Wolves’ annual softball tournament will be moved to Firelake for this year’s edition, which begins on Thursday.

In year’s past, the tournament has been held on the high school’s field as well as OBU’s.

Shawnee opens the tournament with Collinsville at 7:15 Thursday evening.

Final football scrimmages this week

Area football teams will get their second and final dose of preseason action this week with scrimmages scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Unlike last week’s scrimmages, which usually featured three or four teams in a fast-paced, rotating format, scrimmages this week will typically be between two teams and will have more game-like situations.

Among the scrimmages scheduled for this week will be Shawnee at Norman, Tecumseh at Newcastle, Meeker at Luther (Thursday), OCS at Chandler, McLoud at Little Axe (Thursday), Prague at Crooked Oak (Thursday), Seminole at Henryetta (Thursday) and Paoli at Maud.

Area softball teams off to fast starts

Three of last year’s state qualifiers in the Tri-County area are off to hot starts again this season.

Tecumseh, Dale and Bethel are a combined 29-4 on the season, not counting Monday’s results. Tecumseh lost in the quarterfinals in 4A last season, while Bethel was the runner-up in the same class.

Dale is the defending state champions in 2A.

Among this week’s group of games will be the Lady Savages hosting Shawnee on Tuesday. The Lady Wolves, 5-3 on the season, dealt Tecumseh one of their two losses with a 5-4 decision on Aug. 15.

Last year, Shawnee fell a game short of the state tournament. Another team that came up a game short was Chandler. The Lady Lions are 12-2 on the season and have won six in a row.

SHS cross-country opens season

Shawnee runners will kick off their 2014 season with a trip to Carl Albert on Friday. The meet will start at 9:15 a.m. with the 5A-6A girls varsity race, followed by the 5A-6A boys varsity at 9:45 a.m. J.V. races for 5A and 6A will follow, and Classes 2A-4A will follow those.

This will be the first year that girls in Classes 5A and 6A will run the same 5K (3.1 miles) distance as the boys. The lower classes will remain at the 3200-meter distance.

Shawnee volleyball hosts two games

Shawnee will host El Reno on Tuesday, with the varsity match beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. McAlester will be the opponent on Thursday at the same time.

The Lady Wolves will play in the Carl Albert Tournament on Friday.
