  • An assortment of agricultural entertainment and zany contests is planned for the anticipated Pottawatomie County Free Fair.
The fair settles into the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center Sept. 3-6. Event activities, expressed event co-manager Stormi Marlow, are intended to spark community participation.
Marlow created three coloring pages, accessible on the fair’s website, for the children’s coloring contest. Entries will be accepted Sept. 3, 3-6 p.m. Also designed for youth is the Children’s Barnyard, an interactive learning area.
“They do different demonstrations during the day, but it’s also a petting zoo. Friday is Children’s Day,” Marlow said, adding several local students are expected to take a field trip to the barnyard that day.
Senior Citizen’s Day, Sept. 5, features an array of activities, including an apple-peeling contest.
“The person with the longest rind wins,” Marlow explained.
Sept. 6, thumbs will go wild at the texting contest, where community members are challenged to text script at lightning speeds.
“You can bring your own phone, iPad, whatever you have,” Marlow said. “The fastest person with no mistakes in the final round wins the prize.”
A sampling of additional fair highlights includes live music, Firefighter Olympics, square dancing performances, competitive athletic runs, FFA and 4-H exhibits and an antique tractor show.
