The main spectacle, the 7 p.m. CowPie 5K, is a timed race for the entire community.

“The top male and female will get a trophy,” fair co-manager Stormi Marlow detailed. “There are seven different age groups. The top three in each get a medal, and every participant gets a ribbon.”

The 1 Mile Fun Run sounds off 15 minutes later, as does the 1 Mile Crazy Cowboy Run. The cowboy event, a wild race of western proportions, requires participants run in their boots.

“The fastest runner gets a pair of boots, donated by the Shawnee Feed Center,” Marlow said.

Children have access to an additional event; the free Fit N Fun. Children can get inside the big inflatable, which acts as a roller over water. Fit N Fun is open Sept. 5 and 6, 9-10 a.m.

Internet registration for the 5K and 1 Mile races is located at www.freefair.org. In-person registration is available the day of the events, at 5:30 p.m. Prices depend on the selected race. T-shirts will be available for additional purchase.

The fair settles into the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center Sept. 3-6.
