Public invited to attend festivities.

Dr. Frank Howard and Susan Reed will be honored at a reception to be held on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Broadway Arts Gallery and Studio, 655 N. Broadway. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. and will include food and beverages.


The public is invited to attend. A two-day workshop with Reed will follow on Saturday and Sunday.

Dr. Howard is well known in the community as a retired surgeon, painter and golfer.


He practiced surgery in Shawnee from 1963 until his retirement in 1996, but earlier started to follow his interest in painting when in 1987 he began taking lessons in oil painting.


He has continued through practice and lessons with Ellen Flemming and currently, with Linda Dixon. His work reflects his broad interests. He has stated, ”I don’t paint anything I don’t like.”


Reed, the guest artist, was born in Oklahoma, raised in Oklahoma City, but currently resides in Cortez, Colo. Her artist statement includes, “I have lived within arms reach of awe-inspiring ruins, rolling farmlands, majestic mountains, high desert and diverse geology; my cup runneth over and the desire to create gets stronger by the day.”


She is a full-time artist with numerous gallery shows all over the West, and works in various media, primarily in acrylic.


Following the Third Friday reception, she is offering a two day mixed media and collage workshop.
