Annual art exhibit scheduled.
For the 2014 annual art exhibit, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is partnering with the Shawnee branch of the Pioneer Library System to promote literacy. The title and theme for this year’s regional is From Authors to Artists. The exhibit will feature art inspired by literature or poetry or art created from books.
Donna Merkt, MGMoA Curator of Education, is hoping to see some creative artworks made from books. “We've had some incredible book art in past regional exhibits,” commented Merkt, mentioning art pieces made by St. Gregory's University students for last year's “recycled” exhibit.
Though art made from books is encouraged, artists are also able to submit work created from traditional 2-D and 3-D materials, provided that the work corresponds to the theme. “The artwork could reference a specific literary work or perhaps address the theme of literacy directly by showing a person reading.” The theme is meant to be interpreted loosely in order to promote creativity. Anyone with questions about the theme is encouraged to contact the museum at 405-878-5300.
Artists from across Oklahoma are invited to participate in the regional. Anyone, of any age, of any skill level is invited to submit art for the exhibit. There is an option for group entry for school and university classes that would like to participate.
Artists interested in participating in the exhibition should visit www.mgmoa.org/regional for more information, or call 405-878-5300 and speak to Delaynna Trim or Merkt. Participants must register by Oct. 24 (early-bird registration is Sept. 19) in order to guarantee participation; however, the artwork does not have to be delivered until Nov. 1-4. The exhibition takes place Nov. 8-23.
