A homeless Shawnee man who was always with his dog, Baby Girl, was found dead Thursday.

Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz confirmed that Levi Cummings, 63, was found in the garage area of an abandoned house.

And while Shawnee police do investigate such deaths as a homicide, Frantz said it appears that Cummings likely died from exposure to the cold. The state medical examiner will make an official ruling on cause of death.

Cummings was known by many around Shawnee, including those at the Shawnee Senior Center, where he always had breakfast and lunch.

Kate Joyce, director of the center, said the center was his “daytime home,” adding that everyone missed him when he didn’t show up for meals on Thursday.

“He was just a likeable character,” Joyce said. “We are going to miss him.”

And where Cummings was, you could bet his dog, Baby Girl, wasn’t very far from his side. Joyce said Thursday night that they have found a home for Baby Girl.

Glenn Blankenship with the Shawnee Rescue Mission also was saddened to hear about Cummings’ death.

“He was the kindest, sweetest man you ever met,” he said, adding Cummings had a great smile.

According to records from officers having previous contacts with Cummings, it appears he had lived homeless in Shawnee for quite some time.
