A judge has ruled in favor of a woman who filed a lawsuit against Kansas basketball player Sherron Collins concerning an assault she said took place in an elevator.
Douglas County District Court Judge Jack Murphy signed a journal entry in the case Monday granting judgment for damages in excess of $75,000 to Jessica J. Brown.
Murphy ruled in Brown’s favor because Collins had failed to file a legal response to the lawsuit since it was filed May 14.
In a news release, Collins said he wasn’t “fully aware of what was expected of me in the civil suit and what my responsibilities were in that matter. I will do my best to correct this and to prove that this allegation is not true.”
In the lawsuit, Brown accused Collins of exposing himself and rubbing against her on May 18, 2007, in an elevator at a University of Kansas apartment complex.
No criminal charges have been filed.
A court hearing is scheduled for July 8 to determine the exact amount of damages to be awarded, a court clerk said.
Collins, a guard, is the top returning player from a national title-winning Kansas team, which lost three underclassmen — Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur — to the NBA Draft.
Jordan leaving A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — DeAndre Jordan is leaving Texas A&M after one season.
Coach Mark Turgeon said Monday the 7-foot freshman center will stay in the NBA draft with hopes of becoming the third Aggie taken in the first round since 2005.
Jordan averaged 7.9 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds last season. The Aggies lost to UCLA in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Texas A&M’s Acie Law was taken 11th by Atlanta last year, and Antoine Wright went 15th to New Jersey in 2005.
Abrams withdraws
AUSTIN (AP) — Texas guard A.J. Abrams has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return to the Longhorns for his senior season, the school announced.
Texas’ career leader in 3-pointers with 284, Abrams surprised many when he joined point guard D.J. Augustin in submitting his name for this summer’s draft. But Abrams never signed with an agent, allowing him to return to the Longhorns.
Next season, Texas will return four starters from a team that went 31-7, won a share of the Big 12 regular season championship and advanced to the advanced NCAA tournament regional final in Houston.
