OBU claims victory over St. Gregory’s

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Less than two weeks ago, Oklahoma Baptist’s volleyball postseason was in peril but after winning for the 30th time this season on Tuesday night, the Lady Bison head back to Texas and the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a full head of steam.
OBU, winners of 30 matches for the first time since 1980, completed the regular season in a tie for second place in the SAC by beating St. Gregory’s in the Noble Complex, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-12).


Bison rip East Central

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Oklahoma Baptist got a combined 73 points from Nate Brumfield and A.J. Hawkins en route to a 123-94 exhibition win over East Central Monday night.
Brumfield had 39 points on 16-of-21 shooting while Hawkins was 14-of-15 with 34 points, to go with 11 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Lady Bison open with victory, 71-42

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. —

Oklahoma Baptist opened its women’s basketball season Friday with a 71-42 win over  William Jewell in the Baker University Classic in Baldwin City, Kan., after trailing at halftime.
The Lady Bison out-scored the Cardinals 43-11 in the second half with a 55-percent shooting half.  WJC had a 31-28 lead at the half.


Cavs capture season opener

In last year’s 2-29 disaster, St. Gregory’s basketball team was never able to savor a road victory.
This year’s edition earned that reward in Thursday night’s season opener, upending Paul Quinn College 92-82 in two overtimes.

Oklahoma Baptist covered the cross country course at Lubbock Christian University with a team time of 1:37.49 to claim the Sooner Athletic Conference women’s cross country title Friday before the Bison took second in the men’s race.

WR Dez Bryant tells ESPN he will enter NFL draft

STILLWATER, Okla. —

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant is headed to the NFL.

Bryant told ESPN.com that he plans to enter the 2010 NFL draft, disclosing his intentions late Thursday after the NCAA rejected a final appeal by the school to reinstate the junior All-American who lied about contact with former NFL player Deion Sanders.

SGU soccer seasons end

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

St. Gregory’s University’s soccer seasons — men’s and women’s — came to an end Tuesday in Shawnee.
The Cavaliers missed the postseason by one game, finishing up with a 7-9 overall record with a 1-0 win over Sooner Athletic Conference foe Oklahoma Christian. The victory put the Cavs at 4-5 against SAC opponents.


SGU men to open season Nov. 5

St. Gregory’s Cavaliers, coming off a 2-27 season, will attempt to snap a 15-game losing skid as they open their 2009-10 basketball campaign tonight.
The Cavs will face Paul Quinn University at 7 p.m. in Dallas, Texas.

Belles riddle visitors in season opener

SEMINOLE, Okla. —

Seminole State College’s Belles are 1-0 on the season after a 123-45 tripping of Oklahoma City’s junior varsity team Monday.
The Belles outscored the JV Lady Stars 51-19 in the first half, and 72-26 in the second half.
Leading SSC’s charge was Teshia Griswold with 20 points, including a 10-of-17 performance from three-point range.

Oklahoma Baptist secured a home field postseason berth with a 4-2 Sooner Athletic Conference win over Mid-America Christian University Tuesday.
Courtney Anderson put the Lady Bison on top 1-0 with her 19th goal of the season with an assist from Mengjun Zang 47 seconds into the match.


Stoops, Pelini know all about rivalry

NORMAN, Okla. —

Bob Stoops is great friends with Nebraska coach Bo Pelini and even let Pelini’s brother stay at his house for an extended period while they worked together at Kansas State.
He grew up admiring from afar the rivalry the Cornhuskers had with Oklahoma, where he’d eventually be hired as the head coach.
But would he like to see the Huskers re-establish themselves as the marquee team in the Big 12 North?


SGU WINS OPENER

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

St. Gregory’s University started the 2009-10 hoops season on a positive note as the Lady Cavaliers defeated visiting Central Baptist College 88-82 Monday night at W.P. Wood fieldhouse.
Sophomore Jalisa Howard led the Lady Cavs with 22 points, including a 6-of-7 showing at the foul line. Howard connected on eight or her 11 attempts from the field.
Allison Klick and Leticia Silva came off the SGU bench to contribute 17 points and 15 points, respectively, and Silva led the Lady Cavs in boards with eight.
Carletta Hernandez, also off the bench, added 11 points for St. Gregory’s. Klick hit five of six attempts from three-point range, and Lacey Craig had a 100-percent (2-of-2) night at the charity stripe.
