The Seminole State College GEAR UP grant program will be hosting a back-to-school night on Thursday, 5:30 p.m.
The event will be held at the Kelly Haney Center Lecture Hall. The primary purpose of the meeting will be to distribute school supplies.
All area students involved in the GEAR UP program and their parents are invited to the event.
GEAR UP — or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs — is a federal grant program designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
Summer activities of the SSC GEAR UP program will be highlighted with the presentation of a slide show. There will also be a short review of the “Oklahoma’s Promise,” an OHLAP program, and tips for having a successful school year. Details of the GEAR UP tutoring program will also be discussed. Parents attending the event will receive Sonic coupons and Tulsa Air and Space Museum passes. There also will be drawings for door prizes.
School supplies which will be distributed to the GEAR UP students will include mechanical pencils, ink pens, highlighters, loose leaf paper, folder, notebook, three-ringed binder and an academic planner.
For those parents who would like help completing the Oklahoma’s Promise application, GEAR UP advisers will be on hand to provide assistance after the presentation. If help is desired, parents are encouraged to bring a copy of their 2008 tax return.
The goal of the program is to increase academic performance, the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education by helping students, their families and the school districts.
GEAR UP provides workshops, academic enrichment, educational field trips, cultural and family events and information on financial aid and Oklahoma’s Promise. GEAR UP also provides professional development for educators and summer camps for its participants.
GEAR UP serves nearly 600 students in nine area school districts, including Bowlegs, Butner, Justice, New Lima, Paden, Sasakwa, Seminole, Strother and Varnum.
