Mayors in the Tri-County area will join other mayors and vice mayors from communities across Oklahoma for the Oklahoma Conference of Mayors Summer Retreat Thursday through Saturday in Weatherford.
Weatherford Mayor Mike Brown said he’s looking forward to the opportunity to give visiting mayors and vice mayors a dose of western-Oklahoma hospitality and to show what’s best about Weatherford to his colleagues from around the state. He said he hopes this year’s conference will see some new mayors or mayors who have not attended past gatherings.
“We’re particularly trying to encourage those who have never gone to a retreat to participate this year,” he said. “This is always a time to either establish a relationship or renew one, and it’s a good time for mayors to talk frankly about what’s going on.”
Shawnee Mayor Chuck Mills serves as the president of Oklahma Conference of Mayors and serves on the board of directors for the Oklahoma Municipal League, representing District 5.
In addition to a series of educational sessions, mayors will enjoy a tour of Stafford Air and Space Museum guided by Gen. Tom Stafford, and a tour of the Florida Power & Light wind farm. Golfing at Prairie West Golf Course, dinner at Lucille’s, a downtown walking tour and a visit to the farmer’s market also are among the activities the visiting officials will enjoy.
Live entertainment for the mayors will be provided by one of their own — Mayor Alex Damon of Cordell. Along with music partner Dean Jackson, Damon will put on a live rock ’n roll show poolside at the Holiday Inn Thursday night.
On Friday, Brown and Weatherford economic development director Bill Shonley will greet attendees with an introduction to Weatherford. Carolyn Stager, executive director of the Oklahoma Municipal League (OML), will address the group later that morning.
Stager will present highlights of the most recent session of the Oklahoma Legislature and talk to the mayors about the new strategic plan under way at OML. She said the OML board of directors has been invited by OCOM to attend this year’s retreat.
Friday afternoon, a discussion roundtable will address topics, including municipal Web sites, emergency management, Main Street projects, growth issues, tourism and water issues.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett of Oklahoma City will address the gathering Saturday morning with a discussion of big happenings under way in the state’s capital city and what these developments mean for the rest of Oklahoma. Also Saturday morning, Sand Springs city attorney David Weatherford will give a talk titled “The good, the bad and the lovely of being an elected official.”
The final program Saturday will be the open-mic session during which attendees will take the opportunity to bring up current issues of concern, share what’s happening in their towns, ask questions and exchange ideas.
