A chick walks astray from his mother hen and into Farmer Ted’s life in Delena Deatherage’s “The Beginning of People’s Chicken,” published by AuthorHouse. The book is the first in a series based on the adventures of the curious rooster affectionately dubbed “People’s Chicken.”
In the book, readers follow the story from the rooster’s own perspective. People’s Chicken is hatched, but in an unfortunate stroke of bad luck becomes lost from his mother and family. The compassionate Farmer Ted discovers the chick wandering aimlessly and quickly comes to his aid. Under Farmer Ted’s watchful eye, the chick is nurtured back to health.
When the little chick is finally stabilized, he is reintroduced to his mother. In another sad twist of fate, she rejects People’s Chicken. He finds a home with Farmer Ted and his family, where he adapts to home life and their tremendous affection. His new identity as a People’s Chicken is then fully formed.
“The Beginning of People’s Chicken” teaches children about responsible love and compassion. People’s Chicken experiences his own heartbreaks, but the care and concern of Farmer Ted and his family brings immense joy.
Deatherage based the story on a real chick that was adopted into her family.
“Of course, People’s Chicken grew up and eventually expired,” Deatherage said. “But, until then he was very tame and continued to be a member of the family.”
Deatherage calls herself a “simple” woman. She grew up in the farmlands of Missouri and her father was a sharecropper. In 1953, she moved to Seminole. She is the mother of four children, three of which live in Oklahoma. She is proud to have raised her children to know right from wrong and to enjoy the blessings given when one strives for the right things in life. She is in the process of publishing the rest of the “People’s Chicken” series, with the next book titled “People’s Chicken Goes to School.”
