Seminole State College will host a free, 12-week “Family-to-Family” course 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, beginning Sept. 14.
The course is designed specifically for families of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness. Topics covered will include information about major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, borderline personality disorder, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, and co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
Participants will learn coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, basic information about medications, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving and recovery and rehabilitation. Attendees will also learn about caring for themselves and self-care worry and stress techniques.
The series is taught by Karrie Utterback, who has completed intensive training as a course instructor.
The course is for caregivers only and instructor permission is required for enrollment. Class size is limited to 25 students.
The free course has a $30 materials fee that may be waived with instructor approval.
