Pottawatomie County Commissioner Jerry Richards summed up the problem most of the Tri-County area was experiencing when he was asked Tuesday about the roads.
“Terrible,” he said. “Impassable, really.”
Due to those slick, unsafe road conditions, most, if not all, schools in the area were closed Tuesday.
Charlie Dickinson, superintendent of Dale Public Schools, said that he and his fellow superintendents would talk later Tuesday evening before deciding whether to have classes Wednesday.
The following schools had cancelled Tuesday classes and couldn’t be reached by phone: North Rock Creek School, Grove Elementary, Earlsboro, McLoud, Maud Public Schools, Macomb, Tecumseh, Chandler, Meeker, Prague, Wellston, New Lima, Wewoka, Davenport, Carney, Stroud, Seminole, Strother and White Rock Elementary.
Wanette Public Schools was reached Tuesday around noon but hadn’t made a decision about whether classes would be held Wednesday.
All classes and school activities were cancelled Tuesday at Oklahoma Baptist University due to the slick roads. Students or other concerned parties can call 878-2111 for weather-related updates and information.
Buck Day, Pottawatomie County commissioner, said Tuesday graders had been out all day but had done little to improve road conditions. He said the trucks were basically just removing the one layer of ice after the other.
Richards said he had five graders out Tuesday around Pottawatomie County but he seemed doubtful about the good they were doing.
“We’re not doing much good but we are all working,” Richards said. “We’ll stay until we can.”
Pottawatomie County Bob Guinn could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Center’s Web site, conditions should improve today and no more ice, sleet or snow is expected for at least the next two days.
