Shawnee, OK —

I have written on this subject before, so forgive me if I repeat myself. But, I think it is important enough to repeat.

I have noticed that since I have gotten older, my balance is not as good as it used to be. My flexibility is certainly not what it used to be. Case in point: I worked in the yard this weekend and bending, stooping, kneeling — and it goes on and on — has become a monumental task.

If any of you can relate and you are interested, there is help out there for us. There are exercise programs that focus on stretching, flexibility, balance and strength. These programs have been strategically located for availability. The exercise programs are organized and offered on a regular basis. Instructors, who are certified in an exercise program geared for older adults, teach the classes. Classes are free of charge.

Participants in the classes must be at least 60 years old. Classes may be taken seated or standing, and exercises may be modified to suit the varying abilities of participants.  Class components include: warm-up, cardiovascular workout, resistance strength training, flexibility, cool-down and balance training.

These classes are termed “evidence based” meaning that participant’s progress is tracked and recorded.

Project H.E.A.R.T., Inc., a sub-contractor for COEDD, is one of three contractors in the state that received the federally-funded, three-year, EnhanceFitness grant.  EnhanceFitness has won awards from the National Council on Aging, U.S. Administration on Aging, and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Classes are as follows:  Shawnee Downtown, Mon.-Wed.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Shawnee Community Center, Mon.-Thurs.-Fri., 10 a.m.-11 a.m.

Tecumseh Senior Center, Mon.-Wed.-Fri., 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Classes are also offered at the Hi-Rise and the Towers Housing, but these classes are specifically for those residing at the Hi-Rise and the Towers.

Project H.E.A.R.T., Inc. has partnered with Seminole State College, Seminole, to offer the EnhanceFitness classes. They will be offered at Seminole State College, Mon.-Wed.-Fri.,10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Help is here, free of charge and for your taking.  All you have to do is attend the class of your choice. If you would like additional information call Shelly Webb at (405) 246-8381.
