Seminole State College took top honors in news writing at the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association annual awards banquet, held this month in Tulsa.
The banquet was the highlight of the organization’s three-day annual meeting, which brought together representatives from 23 higher education entities across the state.
Awards were presented in categories ranging from Web design to sports publications. Colleges and universities of all sizes — from two-year, regional four-year and comprehensive four-year tiers — as well as public and private institutions, submit entries to the competition.
Yashanda Scruggs, SSC coordinator of media relations, took first place in the state news writing competition for an article titled “Students Dig for Bones in Excavation Course.” The article highlighted a summer criminal justice course on grave excavations at SSC.
Lana Reynolds, SSC vice president for institutional advancement, earned third place in the news category for an article she wrote titled “SSC Student Receives Jeltz Scholarship.” The article covered the awarding of a state scholarship to a young woman from Wewoka who returned to college after dropping out to raise her children.
Reynolds has worked at SSC for the past 20 years, and has served as public information officer, director of public relations and assistant to the president. She served as associate vice president for business and community relations prior to being named a vice president in May of 2005.
The college also received honorable mention at the competition in “Sports Publications” for the 2007-08 volleyball media guide, which was produced by Scruggs.
