The Shawnee High School Fine Arts Department will present its second musical theater production in the new Performing Arts and Athletic Center.
“Once Upon A Mattress” will open at 7 p.m. March 4, 5 and 6 and a 2 p.m. matinee March 6.
The show is a raucous, romantic, melodic spin on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” It features the character of Princess Winnifred, played by Mackenzie Kelly, who swims the moat to reach the castle to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab, played by Josiah Dame, who is immediately smitten with her.
His mother, Queen Aggravain, played by Maile Hopkins, does not share the affection for the moat swimming princess and plots against her. Lady Larken, played by Ashley Roberts, and Sir Harry, played by Luke Argo, are desperate for the prince to marry, because Prince Dauntless has to find his bride before anyone else in the kingdom can marry.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The box office will open 45 minutes before show time and the house will open 30 minutes before. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact Sharon Reese or Gil Guptill at Shawnee High School, 405-275-3084 or by e-mail, SReese@ShawneeK12.ok.us.
The production is made possible through licensing from Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals.
