The Shawnee community is invited to a viewing of the film “Inside/Out” that will be shown at three family nights held at two elementary schools, Jefferson on Monday, and Horace Mann on March 26 and Shawnee Middle School March 30. All activities will start at 6:30 p.m.
The focus of the evening will be drop-out prevention and, since everyone — employers, neighbors, consumers, taxpayers — has a stake in keeping kids in school, the whole community is invited to attend whether they have students in the Shawnee Public School System or not.
Some staggering statistics back up the need to focus on this problem: Every day 7,000 students drop out of school.  Drop-outs are six times more likely than high school graduates to commit crime and become incarcerated, with 75 percent of America’s prison inmates high school drop-outs. Eight out 10 prisoners are functionally illiterate.
Several community efforts are under way to address issues related to school drop out which include poor attendance, bullying, the social environment of the school setting and apathy toward education in general. A high school drop-out/retention committee meets once a month and umbrellas several other programs that are represented on the committee: the START (Stop Truancy and Reduce Tardies) program which receives funding through a Title V grant from the Office of Juvenile Affairs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters which sponsors school-based mentors, the Community Accountability Board governed by the Youth and Family Board and the Municipal Delinquency programs, funded by the Office of Juvenile Affairs CBYSU grant.
Another community-based group sponsored by Shawnee Public Schools has recently been formed to address “bullying” awareness in our schools, the workplace and in our homes. This group is comprised of educators, parents and community members with a mission to prevent bullying victimization.
The focus of this group is to create an atmosphere of safety and respect in our schools and community.
