SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Shawnee Middle School’s seventh-grade students spent a sunny Friday at Shawnee Twin Lakes participating in the school’s seventh annual Outdoor Camp.

Throughout the morning and early afternoon, the students rotated through a variety of stations to learn the basics of several outdoor activities. These activities included fishing, the use of archery equipment and shotgunning.

Volunteers from Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee Middle School and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation worked with the students. Dr. Joe Taron grilled as many as 800 hot dogs to serve to the students and volunteers.

The students also had a visit from Cody Easom and Cody Hughes, the hosts of the outdoor television show “On the Water In the Woods With Cody and Cody.”

SMS teacher Linda Haselwood, the coordinator of the event, is thrilled with what the students take away from the camp.

“This is a way to teach these kids that there is so much more out there than staying in front of the TV,” she said.

Haselwood had worked with a similar camp before coming to SMS, and upon her arrival in Shawnee she teamed up with the ODWC game warden Ronnie Arganbright to start a camp for SMS students.
