Season six “American Idol” finalist and Lyric Street recording artist Phil Stacey will be in Shawnee to perform a free concert at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Raley Chapel at 6 p.m. Sunday. Doors open at 5 p.m. with limited seating on a first-come, first-served basis, but there will be outdoor speakers and a visit from Stacey during intermission for those fans.
Proceeds from a love offering will benefit Family Promise of Shawnee and Shawnee Rescue Mission — two local non-profit organizations that work to alleviate homelessness.
Sunday also has been declared “Phil Stacey Day” by the city of Shawnee.
Stacey released his latest song, “Old Glory,” to country radio stations this week. He wrote the patriotic song while serving on active duty in the U.S. Navy. It can be heard at: www.myspace.com/philstaceymusic, and he will perform it at the concert.
The Shawnee affiliate of Family Promise is in its fourth year of offering a safe and healthy environment to homeless families with children.
This national program helps its guests get back into affordable housing and regain self-sufficiency through the cooperative efforts of local businesses, individuals and church volunteers.
Shawnee Rescue Mission offers assistance with food, clothing, temporary shelter, utilities, transportation for job interviews, and ongoing counseling for alcohol and drug addiction, and anger and grief management. When its new facility is built, the organization will provide a day shelter for homeless people, church services and Christian evangelism courses. An overnight facility is planned as well.
For more information about either organization, call Family Promise at 273-0161 and Shawnee Rescue Mission at 831-6904.
