A Texan recorded the top score in the bull riding so far in this week’s IFYR during Thursday morning’s performance. Zachary Miles, of Gonzales, scored an 82 to take the lead in the second round of the event.
Miles failed to stay on the required eight seconds during the first round and didn’t manage a score. He is in fifth place for the championship, though, with only four bull riders managing to score in both rounds through Thursday morning’s performance.
Leading for the championship is Layne Wyatt Lasley, Mount Vernon, Ark., who has 155 total points through the two rounds, assuring he will make it to Saturday morning’s finals.
Sierra Tallchief, from Dewey, Okla., holds the early second-round lead in the barrel racing after running a 16.236 through the pattern Wednesday night. Her first recorded time for the week during Wednesday morning’s performance was 17.216, giving her a combined totaled of 33.470 on two runs, good enough for fourth place in the overall competition for the barrel racing crown.
Olivia Blanchett, from Rosedale, La., leads the second round in the pole bending competition after managing a run in 19.893 seconds. She sits in second place in the race for title, with a combined time of 40.877 seconds behind Jacksboro, Texas pole bender Calie Turley, who leads with 40.858.
Taylor Gooch, from Hemphill, Texas, roped her calf in 2.4 seconds and leads in the second round of the breakaway roping. Gooch, who posted a time of 3.1 seconds in the initial round earlier in the week, has a combined time of 5.5 seconds in two runs and was leading for the championship headed into Thursday night’s performance.
In the goat tying, Ashley Roberts, with a time of 8.1 seconds, is atop the second-round standings with Brooke Smith, Wetmore, Colo., in second place with a time of 8.5 seconds.
Roberts, from Dublin, Texas, is sitting in fifth place in the average. Her combined time is 19.2 seconds, more than two seconds behind the overall leader, Loni Pearce, of Venus, Fla., whose total is 17 seconds.
Two entrants share the second-round lead in the tie-down calf roping. William Whayne, of Tulsa, and Grant Smith, Gonzales, La., each recorded times of 8.6 seconds.
A pair of Oklahoma bulldoggers are tied for the lead in the second round of the steer wrestling competition. Levi Rudd, from Chelsea, and Broken Bow’s Clay Smith each wrestled their steer down in 4.5 seconds.
Smith also is competing in the team roping.
Leading the saddle bronc competition is Michael Houston with a 64. In second is Magin Montoya, from Roy, N.M., with a 63. They are the only two saddle bronc riders to post a score so far in the second round of that event.
Houston scored a 73 during the first round, and with his 64 added leads the average (championship) with a 137.
Bareback rider Hunter Carter, from Babson Park, Fla., tops that event with a 72. Kendall Casey, from Allen, Okla., with a 70, is all alone in second place. Carter also has the best total score, 143, putting him atop the bareback standings.
A couple of cowboys from Odessa, Texas, and a pair from Oklahoma are sharing first place in the round in team roping. The teams of Jake Smith and Clay Smith, from Broken Bow, and Omar Alvarado and Rodney Bubba Garcia, have identical times of 6.2 seconds.
The Smiths are leading the championship with a total of 13 seconds through the initial two rounds.
