Defending champion moves into second

Defending IFYR pole bending champion Emily Miller took over the second round lead here during Friday morning’s performance, assuring her of qualifying for this morning’s final round at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.
Today’s performance begins at 10 a.m. and the top 15 contestants, including ties, will compete for the IFYR championships in 10 events. They also will be seeking the coveted All Around cowboy and cowgirl titles.
A Meeker contestant was in second place for the barrel racing title after Friday morning’s performance and was also assured of making it to this morning’s final performance.
Lauren Underwood, 16, and from Meeker and who will be a junior at Bethel High School this fall, is in second place in the barrel racing with a total time of 33.322 seconds through the initial two rounds. Her 16.514 seconds recorded in the first round is among the top single times in the barrel racing in this week’s competition. She is competing in her second IFYR this year and on Thursday learned she is an IFYR youth director for next year.
Leading the barrel racing competition for the championship is Brittany Hurley, Clarksville, Ark., who has a combined time of 33.292 in two runs through the pattern.
Miller, from Ingalls, Kan., won the pole bending title here a year ago. She climbed into the overall lead as well following Friday morning’s run of 19.772 through the pole pattern to give her a total time of 40.356 seconds headed into this morning’s final round.
In second place is Calie Turley, Jacksboro, Texas with a time of 40.858 seconds.
Last year’s saddle bronc champion, William Dee “Will” Abshure, has a total score of 144 points through the initial two rounds. He is only one point back of the overall leader, Lufkin, Texas saddle bronc rider Ty Kirkland who has 145 points in the two rounds.
A Sulphur, Okla., bull rider has taken the overall lead in the hunt for the title. Clint Miller has scores of 79 and 77 for a total of 156, to give him a one point lead over Layne Wyatt Lasley of Vernon, Ark., who has a combined score of 155 points.
There will be a new IFYR bareback riding champion crowned this year, Marvin Alderman, Jr., of Idabel, scored a 69 in his first round action Monday night, but failed to mark a score Friday morning and is likely out of the top 15 and this morning’s performance.
Leading the bareback competition is Taylor Broussard, Estherwood, La., with a total of 151 points. In second place is Taylor Price, Huntsville, Texas, with a total of 148.
Loni Pearce, from Venus, Fla., continues in the overall lead for the goat tying title. Her combined time through the first and second rounds is 17 seconds.
Tyler Waguespack, Gonzales, La., is leading the steer wrestling after Friday morning’s action. He has a total time of 8.5 seconds in two runs.
Clay Smith, Broken Bow calf roper, has the overall lead, barely in the calf roping. His 19.2 seconds is just ahead of Garrett Hale, Snyder, Texas, who is 19.3 seconds in two runs.
Smith, along with Jake Smith, also lead the average in the team roping with a combined time of 13 seconds. They are just ahead of Take Kirchenslager, Yuma, Colo., and Clint Summer, Lake City, Fla. whose total time is 13.3 seconds.
Taylor Gooch. Hemphill, Texas, continues atop in the overall breakaway roping standings. Her combined time of 5.5 seconds is just ahead of Ceri Cherise McCaffery of Wayne whose total time through two rounds is 5.8 seconds.
