Dick Hurley must be the petunia king of Shawnee and perhaps of Oklahoma. A couple of years ago I wrote about his discovery of the petunia hybrid, Supertunia. He is still growing those but has expanded to building berms in the back yard that are covered with standard petunias, plus he has added a post to support a basket of petunias over each berm. The berms are surrounded with a row of Rose Moss.
The contributors to his success are good soil, regular fertilization, and frequent applications of water (and perhaps a green thumb!) Every Saturday is fertilizer day. One week he uses standard Miracle Gro fertilizer. The next two weeks he uses Green Light Superbloom fertilizer. This 12-55-6 product is not easily available. Fertilome Blooming & Rooting Formula Soluble Plant Food whose analysis is 9-59-8 is a similar product and is carried by Shawnee Feed Center. Both fertilizers promote profuse blooming. Bougainvillea is a plant that responds well also.
Several installations of Supertunia plants are in the Hurley front yard. These are planted in wire baskets that have been lined with burlap and mounted on posts. Supertunia, originally from Australia, is a Proven Winner plant that has won many awards. It blooms from the time it is planted until there is a hard frost. Although it is an annual I have heard reports of it surviving the winter when planted in the ground. One of its best attributes is that it does not need to be deadheaded.
If you like lots of color, petunias are a great choice.
