SHAWNEE, Okla. —

When should I control white grubs in my lawn?
White grubs are the larvae stage of June bugs. They were laid as eggs last summer, hatched in August and over wintered in the soil. They have started and will continue to emerge this month as adults and the process will start all over.
In large enough numbers, the larvae can cause damage to lawns, especially around night lighting. This is a good month to examine those lighted areas at night to see how many June bugs you see. If you see large numbers, it will probably warrant applying a control.
Using the watered-in granule insecticides are recommended. These should be applied in mid to late August for best affect. It has no effect on eggs and the larvae will hatch in August. They are small and closer to the soil surface making them easier to control. Insecticides have little effect on them, as they go deeper in the soil and become larger. So applying insecticides months later has little effect on them.
