The Tecumseh Public Library is partnering with two community organizations to offer workshops during May on maintaining healthy lifestyles and good nutrition. Ron McIntosh, RD of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe and Sonja McDaniel of the OSU Extension Service each offer a Fit for Life program for adults interested in learning more about diabetes and nutrition.
On May 12 at 6 p.m., McIntosh will talk about diabetes and wellness. He’ll discuss the warning signs of type 2 diabetes as well as prevention and how nutrition and exercise are used in the treatment of diabetes.
McIntosh has worked as a nutrition and fitness coordinator at an urban Indian clinic and a director of food service at an Indian Health Service facility. Currently, he is the community-directed grant coordinator and dietitian for the Diabetes and Wellness Department of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe.
On May 19 at 6 p.m., McDaniel will teach participants about Snacking Savvy. Learn how to snack savvy and avoid hidden calories in the small foods we eat. Snacking smart can keep your mind and body alert throughout the day. There will be a snack demonstration.
These events are part of the libraries programs designed around healthy living and Fit for Life. The Pioneer Library System is one of 17 organizations across the nation to have received a Fit for Life grant made possible by the MetLife Foundation and overseen by Libraries for the Future. Fit for Life emphasizes both physical health and brain health.
The classes are free and registration is required. Call 598-5955 to register. The library is located at 114 N. Broadway.
