Chandler’s third-ranked, Class 3A Lions overcame a 1-0 deficit Saturday en route to handing Wellston a 12-2 setback.
The Lions collected 14 hits to the Tigers’ four, and did not commit an error as Wellston miscued three times. Chance Rich earned the win for Chandler — his first — while facing 27 batters in six innings of work.
Rich (1-0) collected 10 strikeouts and issued four walks while surrendering Wellston’s two earned runs on four hits.
“That was his first start. He pitched really well,” said Chandler head coach Geoff Metheny. “I was pleased with the innings he gave us.”
Jonathan Gray earned the save with one inning of work, fanning one batter and walking one.
The Tigers led 1-0 after one inning as Chandler went on to add one run each in the second and third to take a 2-1 edge.
The Lions posted a three-run fourth to lead 5-1, and led 6-1 in the top of the sixth before the Tigers closed out the frame with their final run.
The Lions, now 16-3, exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh for the final 10-run cushion.
Coming up big at the plate for Chandler was JK Waldman, who finished 3-for-4 with a double, four runs batted in and a run scored. Brandon Cummings went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Devin Mayes went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Casey Barrier collected a pair of hits in five at-bats, batting in one run and scoring three.
Jonathan Frazier finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
For Wellston, Justin King went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Matt Mackey went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tyler Lowery and Tyler Barnes scored the Tigers’ runs.
Chandler will travel to Lincoln County rival Stroud for a 4:30 p.m. game Monday.
