EDMOND — Kyle Lewis has reached the Final Four of the Oklahoma Golf Association Junior Boys Championship being held at the Fairfax Golf Course.
A senior-to-be at Bethel High School, Lewis joins Charlie Saxon of Tulsa, Hunter Sparks of Oklahoma City and Matthew Helms of Edmond as the last four players remaining through the match-play format.
The semifinal match between Sparks and Helms is scheduled to begin at 8:20 a.m. today while Lewis and Saxon will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
The championship match is slated for 12:40.
Lewis began Wednesday’s match-play segment by ousting Edmond product Max Meyers 4-and-3. Meyers had finished the stroke-play competition at 155, 17 strokes out of the lead.
Following that match, the tournament was put on a holding pattern because of rain.
When play resumed, Lewis was matched up against Chickasha’s Taylor Williams, a 2-and-1 conqueror of Caleb Meyers of Edmond. Williams finished stroke play at 150, good enough for a 10th-place tie.
Lewis had little trouble with Williams, winning 5 and 4 to advance to the Final Four.
Lewis finished the stroke-play portion of the tournament — held Monday and Tuesday — at 3-under 139, placing him second behind Sparks in the 50-entrant field.
Lewis posted a 6-under-par 66 Monday for the best opening-round score on the 6,799-yard, bermuda grass course. That put him one stroke up on Sparks, who came in with a five-under 67.
Sparks finished atop stroke play by churning out a 1-under 71 in the second round while Lewis came in with a 1-over 73.
Sparks was a 5 and 3 quarterfinal victor over Connor Kurtz of Edmond. Helms defeated Zach Tucker of Edmond, 3 and 2.
Helms came in fifth in stroke play — eight strokes back of the leader.
Lewis was the 2009 Class 3A state tournament runner-up by one stroke to Saxon at Cimarron Trails golf course. Saxon advanced to meet Lewis by upending Hunter Wade, 2 and 1.
Lewis captured the 3A crown in 2008 after finishing as the state runner-up in 2007, his freshman season.
